Heartwarming tales about diversity and love

It’s July! Am I too late to sow for this year?

I get this feeling every year: “Eeeks, it’s already July! It’s too late to sow for this year!” But actually, it is not.

You are still not too late to sow these fast-growing crops for this year:

  1. Winter cabbages!
  2. Fast-growing baby carrots
  3. Radishes
  4. Beans

I have been showing off my baby carrot seedlings that I am growing in a glass jar. This is an experiment I am doing on no-dig gardening. The advantage of growing yummy carrots in containers of course is that this is a natural, easy way of stopping worms and their friends from munching your yummy carrots.

A couple of my young, leggy seedlings (chilli and beans):

But don’t forget, you can ‘sow’ plants such as spring onions (scallions) all year round. You can also buy herbs in pots from supermarkets and repot them for a fuller growth.

This is my dad’s basil that I bought from the supermarket to make a pasta sauce. he repotted the leftovers and put the pot in a sunny spot. Look at it now!

But most importantly, July is the time for saving seeds for the next year. Here’s my dad and I collecting poppy seeds from his garden for me. His poppies are beautiful, and much loved by my late mother.

Happy sowing! And send us your photos! bigcheese@cheeseplantbooks.com
